The Role of NDIS in Fostering Inclusion for People with Disabilities

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is an important government- funded scheme which reshaped the way we approach disability support and provided a new perspective regarding independent living and the personal autonomy of people with disabilities. The NDIS provides direct funding to its participants to purchase support and services which enables them to participate fully in their community, achieve their goals and lead a life of their choice. The NDIS represents a major step towards a more inclusive society for individuals with disabilities and serves as an example of providing disability support without compromising on the choice and control of the participants.

The NDIS provides funding for support and services which assists people with disabilities to live independently, pursue education, find employment, overcome functional limitations and become active members of their community. Core Supports like Assistance with Daily Living as well as Assistance with Social and Community Participation foster inclusion by helping the participants to build social connections, reduce isolation, and promote a sense of belonging and independence, all of which are essential for leading a meaningful life. Capacity Building supports like Supported Independent Living, Support Coordination and Respite Support enable the participants to navigate the NDIS and equip them with essential skills necessary for pursuing their goals. There are many more NDIS support and services like this that foster inclusion and promote independence for people with disabilities.
