In today’s diverse and inclusive society, institutions and services must reflect the needs of all individuals, including those living with a disability, regardless of their cultural or linguistic backgrounds.
The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) in Australia has taken significant steps towards empowering Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) communities through its NDIS Cultural and Linguistic Diversity Strategy 2024-2028. To enhance outcomes for CALD participants, the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) formulated a Cultural and Linguistic Diversity Strategy 2024-2028 along with an Action Plan. The primary goals of the Strategy are to enhance access to and engagement in the NDIS for CALD communities, boost the usage of NDIS plans among CALD participants and enhance the overall NDIS experience for them. Additionally, an Action Plan has been established to ensure that the progress of the Strategy is monitored, evaluated, and reported.
The NDIS CALD Strategy 2024-2028 outlines six key priorities:
• Infrastructure
One of the priorities is to improve the foundational systems and processes within the NDIS to ensure they are more accommodating and supportive of CALD participants.
• Staff capability
The NDIS will provide their staff with the necessary skills to effectively address participants’ cultural requirements.
• Accessible communications
CALD communities often have unique communication preferences and language requirements. This priority highlights the need for clear and culturally appropriate communication channels within the NDIS.
• Markets
NDIS providers play a crucial role in delivering services to Cultural and Linguistic Diversity participants and their families. This priority aims to support providers in offering culturally sensitive and responsive services.
• Data
Data can be a powerful tool in understanding and improving services for CALD participants. This priority focuses on leveraging data effectively to improve services for CALD participants.
• Outreach
Despite the benefits of the NDIS, some CALD communities may face barriers to accessing and engaging with the scheme. This priority emphasises the importance of educating and connecting with CALD communities that have not yet accessed the NDIS.
At Classy Life, we embrace the unique needs of CALD communities, offering tailored support that respects cultural nuances and communication preferences. We constantly strive to foster an environment where CALD participants feel heard, understood, and valued.
