Embracing Inclusion: A Guide to NDIS Social and Community Participation

Participating in social and community activities not only enriches one’s life but also boosts our confidence and self-esteem. Many public spaces and community activities are not designed to be accessible and inclusive which can hinder the participation of individuals with
disabilities. The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) has always strived to resolve this by providing necessary support and services to their participants which enhances accessibility and enables them to engage in activities of their choice. Assistance with Social and Community Participation is the primary NDIS-support through which participants can fulfill their community participation goals.
Engaging in social and community participation involves pursuing activities that align with the goals and interests of the participants. They are activities integrated into their daily lives which they enjoy. Social and community participation can hold different meanings for
different people. For some, it may involve meeting people with similar interests and doing activities together while others would like to engage in active sports or pursue a new hobby. Participants can talk to their NDIS planner, Local Area Coordinator, Support Coordinator or the Service Provider to connect with social and community activities of their choice. Using their Core Supports funding, participants can access Assistance with Social and Community Activities where trained NDIS support workers will address the disability-related support needs of the participants during community activities and events.
