Choosing the Right Home and Living Option: SIL Vs SDA

Home and living support that are tailored to meet the needs of people with disabilities are important in improving their overall quality of life and accessibility to various support and services. A suitable living environment will improve the functional capacity of people with disabilities by making it easier for them to move around and carry out everyday activities which will significantly improve their independence. Supported Independent Living (SIL) and  Specialised Disability Accommodation (SDA) are two of the many funded home and living supports available under the NDIS through which participants can live independently.

While Supported Independent Living (SIL) helps participants with higher support needs to access paid support which helps them carry out personal care tasks and daily activities, Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) provides access to specialised homes that suits their disability support needs. Through SIL funding, participants can pay for the services of trained support workers who will deliver a significant level of assistance all day, every day including overnight support. SDA funding includes the cost of the specialised structure or the housing designed for people with functional limitations but the participant may still have to pay the rent to live there. Personal living costs of the participants such as their rent, utility bills, cost of groceries and other expenses are not covered under either SIL or SDA funding. The level of SIL support that can be funded in a participant’s NDIS plan changes as per their disability support needs. A participant’s NDIS plan can include one or both types of support – SIL and SDA – depending on which option is more suitable to their needs.
