Building Your Independence with NDIS Core Supports

Disability support systems are designed to empower people with disabilities and equip them with the skills and knowledge necessary for them to lead a life that they have always envisioned for themselves. Disability support helps people with disabilities to achieve their goals and become independent in life. The Core Supports funded in an NDIS plan is a perfect example of this. These supports assist the participants with their everyday activities and thereby help them make significant progress towards their NDIS goals.

There are four support categories in the Core Supports budget. They are Assistance with Daily Life, Consumables, Assistance with Social and Community Participation and Transport. The main advantage of Core Supports funding is that it is flexible and the participant can move their funding across the Core Support categories depending on their needs. But in some circumstances, the participant may not have that flexibility of funding especially when it comes to transportation. Participants can access assistance with their personal care needs, household chores, cleaning, meal preparation and even yard maintenance under the Core Support category Assistance with Daily Life. This will enable the independence of the participants by helping them to get a productive start to their day and sometimes, in getting ready for school or work. With time, participants will gain the confidence and capability to do some of these tasks on their own. Then they can reduce the daily support and use the funding for more assistance during Social and Community Participation or on Consumables for improved functional capacity.

If the participant’s disability is preventing them from accessing public transport, they can get transport funding under the NDIS. This will also help them to become independent as the funding will make it convenient for the participant to get more involved in work and social activities.
