Person-Centred Care: What It Means and Why It Matters

When it comes to disability support, no two individuals have the same needs, aspirations, or challenges. That is why Person-Centred Care is a fundamental principle of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS). Instead of a standardised approach, person-centred care ensures that supports and services are designed to align with each participant’s goals, preferences, and way of life. It gives people greater control over the support they receive and allows them to shape their NDIS journey. Instead of being passive recipients of services, they become active participants in shaping their future.

NDIS supports such as Individualised Living Options (ILO), Supported Independent Living (SIL), and Community Participation are all designed to align with the principles of person-centred care. In an ILO arrangement, a person who wishes to live independently but requires occasional support can design a living setup that suits their lifestyle, such as sharing a home with a supportive housemate or receiving assistance from a network of chosen supports. SIL provides tailored, round-the-clock assistance in a shared or individual living arrangement, ensuring that daily needs such as personal care and household tasks are met while promoting independence. Through Community Participation, individuals can engage in activities that reflect their personal interests such as joining an art class, participating in sports, or volunteering and building relationships. Beyond the immediate benefits, person-centred care is also about long-term well-being. When individuals receive support that is genuinely suited to their needs, they are more likely to experience stability, personal growth, and a higher level of satisfaction with their lives. This not only improves their day-to-day experiences but also contributes to a future where they can live life on their own terms.
