NDIS Respite Care: Why It’s Important for Both Participants and Families

Respite care, also known as Short Term Accommodation (STA) under the NDIS, plays a crucial role in ensuring that both participants and their caregivers receive the necessary support to maintain a healthy and sustainable care environment. Respite care is
more than just a temporary break. It offers participants the opportunity to engage in new experiences, build their independence, and interact with peers in a supportive environment.
For caregivers, it provides much-needed time to rest, recharge, and attend to personal commitments, ultimately preventing burnout and ensuring they can continue providing quality care. Under the NDIS, respite care is funded through Short-Term Accommodation
(STA) support.

A key benefit of STA support for participants is the change of environment it offers. Stepping away from their usual routine can be refreshing and enriching, as it allows them to develop new skills, explore new interests, and participate in social activities.Participants can stay in a supported environment, either individually or with peers, where they receive assistance with daily activities while engaging in community-based programs. This ensures that they continue working towards their NDIS goals, such as improving social skills, gaining independence, or trying new activities. Under the NDIS Short Term Accommodation (STA) funding, respite care can be used for up to 28 days per year. Short stays in a supported setting allow participants to gradually become comfortable with new environments, making the transition to more independent living arrangements, such as Supported Independent Living (SIL), much smoother in the future. It also helps to develop a sense of self-reliance, helping them gain confidence in their ability to navigate daily life with less dependence on their family or primary carers. If respite care aligns with a participant’s NDIS goals,               it can be funded under the Core Supports budget.
