The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is designed to deliver support and services that help people with disabilities to pursue their life goals. Having goals in life are important as it will promote self-growth and encourage you to be aspirational as well as independent. Being an NDIS participant will help people with disabilities to set goals for themselves and work towards the things that they want in life.
A person’s NDIS journey is ultimately about learning to become more self-reliant and living a good life. To get started with that, you need to check whether you fulfil the eligibility criteria for the NDIS by answering some of the questions given on the NDIS website under the eligibility checklist. If you meet the necessary eligibility requirements, the next step is to apply for NDIS funding through an Access Request Form. You will also need to provide the necessary details and evidence regarding your disability for NDIS approval. If you are confused about completing the application process, you can reach out to your Local Area Coordinator (LAC) or NDIA office for assistance. After you complete the application and provide the necessary documents, the NDIS will decide on your approval in 21 days. If you get approved, then you will be able to build an NDIS plan for yourself through a planning meeting with an NDIA representative or your LAC.
Once your plan is in place and gets greenlighted by the NDIS, you will be able to access various support and services. The final step is to decide how you are going to manage your NDIS plan. You have the option to self-manage your plan, let a plan manager handle the responsibility or directly allow the NDIA to manage your plan. In case you are not satisfied with any of the supports in your NDIS plan, you can raise the issue during your plan reassessment.
